Microsoft Research Asia Singapore has reached its first anniversary, focusing on the development of multimodal healthcare AI and self-evolving diagnostic agents. The lab operates through four research pillars to translate foundational AI advances, such as tool-using agentic systems, into practical applications through partnerships with local universities and government agencies.

Foundational research and agentic systems

The lab focuses on four research pillars: next-generation models, domain-specific applications, AI-native research practices, and ecosystem development. A primary technical objective involves building agentic systems capable of reasoning, planning, and tool use to collaborate with human operators. This foundational work is intended to create a research-to-impact cycle where real-world application data informs new fundamental questions.

Healthcare applications and research limitations

Current research efforts include multimodal AI for clinical decision-making and self-evolving agents for disease diagnosis and risk assessment. These projects are conducted in collaboration with local healthcare institutions to process medical data and personalize care. However, the reported developments remain in the research and deployment testing phase, with the long-term goal of enabling practical use still pending broad verification in clinical environments.
