AWS introduced Web Search for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, providing a managed Model Context Protocol server. This tool connects Claude Desktop to an Amazon web index of tens of billions of documents, allowing the model to retrieve real-time information while keeping query traffic entirely within AWS infrastructure.
Integrated search for desktop agents
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore now includes a fully managed web search capability compatible with the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This integration allows Claude Desktop users to bypass training data cutoffs by querying a web index spanning tens of billions of documents. The system is designed to provide agents with access to current documentation, live pricing, and other real-time data sources.
The architecture utilizes the AgentCore Gateway to facilitate communication between the desktop AI client and the search index. By using a managed service, developers can implement web search without maintaining external API keys or routing traffic through third-party search providers.
Enterprise authentication and security boundaries
Security is handled through a federation layer involving AWS IAM Identity Center and Amazon Cognito. This setup uses SAML for user authentication and OAuth 2.0 to issue JSON Web Tokens, which the AgentCore Gateway validates for every request. This ensures that the identity flow aligns with existing corporate governance without requiring separate credentials.
A significant limitation is the requirement for specific AWS infrastructure configurations, including Cognito and IAM Identity Center, to establish the secure tunnel. The service is currently framed as a capability within the broader Bedrock AgentCore platform, focusing on users running Claude within the AWS ecosystem.
